School Construction Site in Cite Soleil

Haiti

All fundraising targets have contingency allowances as conditions and costs can fluctuate dramatically within the country.

The school sponsorship continues with Ecole Chretienne Pour le Development in Cite Soleil. This will involve the further purchase of land, construction of, and renovations to, the school buildings and facilities. In 2005 we completed construction of the kitchen facility in a new compound for the school. We have been working with the school since our second visit in 2004. The kitchen facility was hopefully going to spark a food program which had been delayed due to the new priority set by the school. That priority was the completion of the school building. The school has since obtained access to a food program through another organization. The students receive a small portion of milk and food in the morning and a plate of food for lunch. The school does have a cistern for water. In May 2006 we completed the first phase of the renovations on the new building, rendering it habitable by the students. The school now is owned by the community but it needs further work. In 2007 & 2008 we continued renovations while also raising money to buy adjacent land. The school compound has been expanded in the back. An American from the eastern states helped in these interim years by financing the paving of the school playground and building new latrines for the students. The school has been painted.

In 2009 we had completed the purchase of additional land and began work on the second story. This second story will have two purposes. The community has designed it to be a high school (one of the first in Cite Soleil) and a community meeting hall. The walls will be movable to allow for divided classrooms to open up into one large central room. At the end of the 2009 trip the second story walls were up and new office space

was being renovated. The next phase was iron pillar work to support the roof of the second story.

Cite Soleil School Sponsorship Program.

Target 1- Rehabilitation and ongoing construction of school compound and land purchase. There are approx. 280 students in the school who come from all over Cite Soleil and neighbouring communities. Ecole Chretienne is dedicated to providing education for the children of poor families regardless of religious belief, political affiliation, or financial ability. A high school is badly needed for the community as students have to walk or ‘tap tap’ long distances to continue their educ

ation.

Target 2 - TWA Scholarship program which will help sponsor both elementary and high school students. Sponsorship goes to supporting the school community. Money covers tuition, books and elementary school uniforms etc. This sponsorship is $200 CAN/yr

Target 3 - Physical Donations – General school supplies. TWA brings as many school supplies as possible. School backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, erasers etc.

Other projects and donations

Medical supplies and hands on healing and care giving. There are four main locations. The Brother’s medical clinic in the slum of Simon Pele. A facility called Wings of Hope which houses handicapped children and young adults who have been abandoned by their families or recommended by the Haitian Welfare system. Mother Teresa’s  malnutrition clinic which houses babies and toddlers who are seriously malnourished and sick. Their parents cannot afford to feed them nor obtain medical assistance. the fourth is the AIDS hospital. All donations of medical goods are distributed according to need which is assessed through consultation while in Haiti.

We bring medical supplies and basic items such as skin lotions, gloves, baby powder, bandages, hand sanitizer, over the counter medicines, etc. We also visit each day to give massages, bathe, clip nails, listen and talk, and anything else that is needed. At the malnutrition clinic we assist in regular diaper changes, feeding, and offering human contact. At Wings of Hope we assist in the physiotherapy program as well as feeding and general assistance according to what is needed.

Croix De Bouquet - We are helping Haitians to build a shelter for earthquake orphans. Hopefully we will be able

All financial donations welcome. 100% of donations are used for projects in Haiti. TWA does not maintain paid staff or offices and is solely run by volunteers. Administration is minimum and costs are largely covered with donations from supporting members and the Board of Directors. All projects employ Haitians from within the communities where we work.
